Mulberry Crumble Pie

DSC_0175

Hi everyone!  I just made my very first ever pie and it turned out pretty amazing so I thought I’d share the recipe here.  I found a couple different recipes for different kinds of pies and combined them while tweaking them a little bit more.  I must confess I used a pre-made pie crust this time since I was a little scared of my first pie.

I have been wanting to make a mulberry tree for two summers now, and since we have mulberry trees in our yard now I took it as a sign.

Here’s what you will need for the filling:

  • 4 cups of mulberries (blackberries would also be amazing!)
  • 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3 tablespoons of Lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons of butter (I used vegan butter which also works.)

Just combine all ingredients and mix.  place into uncooked pie crust.

Now for the crumble:

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons quick oats
  • 3 Teaspoons cold diced butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  1. In a bowl whisk flour and baking powder.
  2. Add diced butter and mix together with your fingers.
  3. Add oats and sugar. Whisk.
  4. Pour topping on top of pie.
  5. Pat down with your fingers.

Bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees F.  After 15 minutes turn the oven down to 350 degrees F, and bake for about 15 more minutes.  The top should be golden and sides bubbling.

Let it cool and enjoy with ice cream or even just by itself.  I’ve never really been big on ice cream on pie.  Weird I know!

The pie filling I got from a blog called Elizabeth Minchilli in Rome, and the crumble was from a strawberry pie I found at On Sutton Place.

 Have fun baking and eating!

Record Table

Happy Fourth of July everyone! I hope you all are having a great weekend and got to see some fireworks and some friends and family.

So I’ve seen these easy side tables made with a plant stand and old records and thought I’d make one for a birthday present for a birthday coming up. I bought the plant stand at Menards and I think I got my records from good will. I’ve had them a while waiting to make things with them.

When I got home the opening to the
Plant stand was a little wider than I had planned on it being but I made it work by just gluing the three prongs that stick up. I used e6000 glue and so far it is holding. The records were a little flimsy so I used two glued together do that it could hold more. So far so good!

Also we went into Chicago yesterday to see some friends and watch fireworks at Navy Pier so here are a couple pictures from our fourth!

Colander Hanging Basket

20140623-114819-42499690.jpg

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all having great Summers so far!  Sorry it’s been so long since I posted anything, I was in Indiana visiting family and friends and have been busy doing typical Summer things like weddings, garage sales and so on.  I’ve also been trying to beautify my outdoor spaces as well so I thought I’d share this DIY colander hanging basket.  It’s pretty easy and I’ve been meaning to make it for a long time now I just needed to acquire a metal colander.  I was helping a friend have a garage sale this weekend and she had an old colander that she let me have in return so voila!

all you need is:

A colander

Dirt

Plants of your choice

Chain plus S hooks to stick either in the colander holes or around the handles

And another hook for the top

my supplies

my supplies

I actually found a hanging basket chain kit at Walmart, it was in the chain and rope section.  I had to bend the S hooks to get them to fit but all in all it was very easy.

Before the chain

Before the chain, I made a mess!

Plus the colander is perfect since the water drains right though the holes!

Happy making!  Let me know what other found objects you have used to put plants in.

It’s much shinier in real life. I couldn’t really get a good picture of it glistening.

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all having a freak weekend, if only it could be a little longer.

For this weekends DIY I made a necklace. I kinda stumbled onto this one. I was outside on my patio looking at the stones around the landscaping when I found a particularly sparkly crystal-like one and got the idea to make something with it. I modpodged gold leaf onto the back after I cleaned the dirt off with water and a toothbrush. Actually I would recommend gold paint to liquid gold leaf instead but I didn’t have any.

I then wrapped it in gold wire and put it on a chain. I like the way it looks but I think I might add some beads or charms later. It’s a start. I’d like to find different rocks to try it with also.

Let me know what found objects you have made into jewelry!

I need some help deciding!

Hey everyone! Happy Thursday, it’s most the weekend and I’m so excited! I have a wedding to go to in Indianapolis so it’ll be one of those busy in the car most of the time weekends.

So I recently did an at home try on, ok maybe two at home try ons from Rivet & Sway. I don’t know if you’ve heard of them, but they make prescription glasses and sunglasses designed especially for women with smaller faces. I’ve always had trouble getting my glasses to stay up and then you get the dreaded headache; same as the headband headache. Also they let you try on five different frames at home for free which is what got me in this dilemma.

I need new glasses but can’t decide which pair to pick so I am in need of some advice. So what do you think?

I’m thinking of picking one of these two.

Here are the others

Agh! To many choices! Let me know what you think. Also check Rivet & Sway out. They have the cutest glasses around.

DIY Hummingbird Feeder

20140511-200212.jpg 20140511-200158.jpg 20140511-200134.jpgI’m so excited for warm weather finally and cannot wait to decorate my patio since this is the first summer we have had one in about 4 years.  I want it as nature friendly as possible. (partly because I like to watch my cats freak out at birds and other animals!)  I made this hummingbird feeder very easily with just a red bottle, copper colored wire and a special hummingbird feeder that I bought off of amazon.  The color of the bottle doesn’t have to be red but I know they are attracted to red so I figured it wouldn’t hurt.  I bought my bottle from Pier One.  I just wrapped the wire around the bottle, making sure it was secure and made a loop at the top to hang it from.

I also have a recipe to make your own nectar as well.

1 cup sugar

4 cups water

boil water and sugar until melted.  Cool and fill the feeder.  You can store the rest in an empty container.

I haven’t seen any hummingbirds yet but I think it’s a little early in the year for them to migrate north yet.  I can’t wait to see them!

Cinnamon popcorn

20140511-200114.jpg

I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day weekend! I made sure I was outside as much as possible. I bought a new bike so now I can finally go on rides. We also went out exploring, shopping and just enjoyed the 80 degree weather. Even the cats are loving it. (mostly because of all the birds on the patio)

I thought for its week I’d post a recipe. We’ll not really a recipe it’s just how I like to make popcorn. We’ve been on a big popcorn kick here lately and I of course have a huge sweet tooth so I like to sweeten mine. We pop our own which is way healthier and just as fast as the microwave kind. It’s cheaper and has less nasty chemicals too.

We pop it over the stove in coconut oil which tastes great! I then drizzle mine with agave syrup and coat it with cinnamon. I mix it up and then its ready to enjoy. It’s so good and not that bad for you. I also use Trader Joe’s pumpkin spice sometimes too if you like pumpkin.

Enjoy and let me know how you like your popcorn!

Stuff I Made: A Skirt

Image

I haven’t really had much time to work on anything new lately and was sick all of last weekend, (boo!) but I’m feeling much better now have lots of new projects planned!  I thought I’d show off this skirt I made a few years ago from old kitchen curtains.  I found the curtains at an antique store I used to frequent when I lived in Fort Wayne.  I loved how kitschy they were but didn’t have any windows they would fit on and they didn’t really match my decor so I made them into a skirt.   Let me know if you’ve ever made anything found into something wearable, I’d love to see your projects.  Have a great rest of the weekend and hopefully the weather stays nice for everyone!

Easter Weekend

I hope everyone had a great weekend, whether you celebrate Easter or not!  The weather here was perfect and I was sooo happy to be outside after a long cold winter.  Saturday we drove back to Indiana to see my family and took a walk to the old rail road trestle by my mom’s house.  20140422-202946.jpg20140422-203002.jpg

On Sunday we went to Ben’s family’s Easter dinner and watched his nephew hunt for eggs for the first time.  I also took some pictures of his dad’s old gremlin.  I ate way too much candy this weekend, but hey that’s what Easter is for!

Oh and I got this adorable peeps skewer thingy from my friend Kelly.  Everyone that knows me knows I have an unhealthy obsession with peeps.  Thankfully they aren’t available all year long or I’d be in trouble!
